Adult Intensive Outpatient Program

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured treatment program for adults who need more support than weekly therapy, but do not require inpatient care. It provides a higher level of outpatient support while allowing patients to live at home and maintain daily responsibilities.

Del Amo Behavioral Health System Adult Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Why Choose An Adult Intensive Outpatient Program

Adult IOPs provide mental health support to individuals through a combination of group and individual therapy. IOPs are typically a few hours, a few days a week, which makes them more structured than weekly individual therapy, but still allows for work, school or family obligations. This makes them a great step-down from inpatient care or Partial Hospitalization programs (PHPs).

If you are struggling with your mental health while currently in individual therapy, or if you think you could benefit from the group-and-individual combination approach, then an IOP may be the right choice for you. Behavioral health IOPs can help you with:

  • Symptom Management
  • Life Skills
  • Self-Esteem
  • Support Systems
  • Processing Feelings
  • Relapse Prevention

You can talk to a mental health provider or physician if you think structured outpatient care through an IOP may help you manage your mental health.

While PHPs and IOPs both allow you to stay at home, IOPs require fewer hours, and therefore allow you to be more autonomous.

Anyone struggling with their mental health, who would benefit from a combination of group and individual therapy several times a week is a good fit for an IOP program.

IOPs can help with a variety of moderate-to-severe mental health conditions, but may be most effective for those with substance use disorders or dual diagnosis (co-occurring) disorders.

Yes, one of the benefits of an IOP is maintaining your usual schedule. If your IOP does require you to modify your work schedule, such as starting later or leaving earlier, your mental health provider can assist you in communicating with your workplace about accommodations.

You can schedule a level of care assessment with us online, or talk to your current mental health professional or primary care physician about a referral to an IOP program.

Whether or not your IOP treatment is covered by your insurance will vary based on the insurance plan you have. We accept a variety of insurances at Del Amo, and offer bill pay assistance programs.
