Adult Partial Hospitalization Program

An adult partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a full-time day program that provides many of the same treatments and therapies as an inpatient program with more freedom. Each participant within the program will work with the treatment team to develop an individualized treatment plan and goals that will improve quality of life and aid in symptom reduction.

Why Choose An Adult Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

Patients who have completed an inpatient program are often stepped down into outpatient mental health treatment such as an adult partial hospitalization program (PHP). Here, mental health issues are addressed by teaching patients new, healthy coping skills and behaviors. This gives them the opportunity to apply these tools within their own environments as they transition back to their homes, work and social lives.

Some patients may enter behavioral health services directly through adult PHP rather than stepping down from an inpatient program. They may be experiencing difficulty coping with stressors in everyday life or other mental health issues. This program is for them as well.

Patients who attend a PHP for adults may be able to expect:

Who Can Benefit From Adult PHP?

An adult partial hospitalization outpatient treatment program is best for treating mental illness in individuals who are either stepping down from residential treatment or entering treatment and need more structure than an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

For those stepping down from residential treatment for anxiety disorders, depression or other mental health conditions to outpatient behavioral health services, a PHP is a great way to continue to receive treatment and readjust slowly using the skills you learned during your inpatient stay.

Studies show that the longer an individual remains connected to their support groups through the Continuum of Care, the less likely they are to relapse in the future. If you are stepping down from an inpatient treatment center, it may be a good idea to enter a PHP as part of your treatment plan.

For those entering treatment for the first time, an adult PHP allows for individuals to see mental health professionals and receive many of the same mental health services as an inpatient stay with the added benefit of returning home at the end of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

A partial hospitalization program takes place for most of the day throughout the week, while an intensive outpatient program takes place for a few hours a day for a few days per week. While both are effective forms of treatment, a PHP is a higher level of care than an IOP.

The typical stay in a partial hospitalization program lasts between two to six weeks, but it is best discussed with your care team how long you are needed to stay.

You may need a referral to attend a PHP, or at least need to talk to the admissions department and be assessed to help determine if it may be right for you.

Some insurances cover the cost or some of the cost of a partial hospitalization program. As always, it is best to contact your insurance company or our admissions department to see what may be covered.

A PHP takes longer in the day than an IOP or outpatient counseling, and it may be difficult to work while attending. That being said, there is time after treatment, so you may be able to work. It is best to discuss this with your care team and potentially your employer.

After you complete PHP, you will likely take a step down to a lower level of care, such as an IOP or outpatient counseling. That way, you remain connected to treatment but also have more time to practice what you learn.
